When Jeff Rogers at Sparks Music suggested we feature Spiral Beach as our very first TRANSIT performance, we were genuinely thrilled. I’d seen them once before at a Sparks Music party and was impressed by their coiled grace and stage presence. Because we were really entering virgin territory with this whole project, a great deal depended on our first few bands ‘getting’ the concept and enduring our repeated requests for retakes until we got the angles and the sound just right. Well, Spiral Beach gave us all that and more.

Entirely charming, with a rich vocal presentation and a well-rehearsed set,  we could tell this was a band with chops. Considering as well that they took a break from an intense studio recording session (for their latest album, “Ball”) just to sit for three long hours, in the mid-January cold, we will always owe a debt to this foursome.

For the shoot day, we were blessed with gorgeous sunlight throughout the afternoon, which more than made up for the -20 degree temperature outside. Our TTC driver and supervisor were perfectly accommodating and set a sedate pace along the tracks that ensured minimal starting-and-stopping. A key, we discovered, to keeping Josh, our cameraman, upright.

We embarked on our maiden voyage to the sounds of “Vagueries” and then “Orange”. Personally, I was thrilled during our sound check to hear the band break into an impromptu cover of the Violent Femmes’ “Waiting For the Bus”. An appropriate choice considering our circumstances.

Near the end of the session, we actually ground to a halt because someone had parked their car too close to the tracks, preventing the streetcar from moving. But because the light was so good, we decided to shoot anyway. In the end, this was the best performance of the day, so we kept it.  - cb

Spiral Beach have been described variously as eclectic, dance pop, and Electro-art fusion. Whatever descriptors you care to apply, their songs are filled with colour and perspective, comparable to the B-52s or early Zappa and they are quickly becoming known for their explosive, and sometimes outlandish, live shows. One thing is certain, they exceed typical genre categorization, and prove that music can always be new.

With the release of "Ball" in the fall of 2007 a few signs of media interest had already emerged. The band had already graced the cover of Toronto street rag "NOW" and they had ruffled feathers with their performance on Canada's MTV-LIVE when they unexpectedly invited ten of their fans in crazy costumes up on stage to join the "live" broadcast! The band had also toured extensively throughout Canada and had been invited to tour with both Sloan and Hidden Cameras in the U.S....mere teenagers at the time they were becoming true road warriors.

But it wasn't until the spring of 2008 that the momentum seemed to become more real. Dazzling reviews from bloggers and mainstream press started to appear. A live performance on XM’s 'The Verge' was rated as the show's Top Performance of the Year! A local Toronto radio station selected the band for their 'Next Big Thing' month long promotion...and soon after nominated them 'Best New Indie Band' of the year for the CASBY AWARDS. Meanwhile the CD was embraced by college radio peaking on the EARSHOT chart at #16!

A trip to the U.K. followed with BBC Radio 1 airplay and a mini club tour. Over 1000 new Brit friends joined the bands MySpace site! Back in Toronto MUCHMUSIC added the 'Made of Stone' video into medium rotation and the radio play across the country started to pick up steam. The band began to appear in front of bigger audiences playing events like SXSW, NXNE [Sirius/CBC live to air], Hillside, POP Montréal, Halifax’s Pop Explosion and Virgin fest.

Their latest release "Ball" came out in the the Spring of 2009 on Sparks/Tommy Boy and the band will support the album with a tour planned for the early summer. – from sparksmusic.com
